The Geographical Indications Registry is established under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 and functions under the administrative control of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The Registrar of Geographical Indications is responsible for the registration of Geographical Indications maintenance of records and enforcement of the provisions of the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 Act. The Registrar is assisted by other officers as required for effective administration.
